Some Management Objectives of the Peasant Farmer: An Analysis of Risk Aversion in the Choice of Cropping Pattern, Surat District, India
In: The journal of development studies: JDS, Band 12, Heft 3, S. 246-261
ISSN: 0022-0388
The cropping patterns chosen by a group of peasant farmers in Surat, India, are examined, using a simple model of risk aversion. Observed behavior corresponds closely to the hypothesis that farmers allocate land to different crops by striking some balance between the competing criteria of increasing income & decreasing risk, measured by income variability. The actual definition of risk is the X absolute deviation of income around its X level. Consequently, these farmers are not economically efficient in the sense that they do not maximize expected profits. Analysis of other decisions made by these farmers -- eg, levels of fertilizer use, adoption of new varieties, & the number of livestock maintained -- also suggests that profit maximization alone is not an adequate criterion for explaining farmers' decisions. 3 Tables, 4 Figures, Appendix. Fertilizer and seeds demand in Kenya from 1982/83 to 1990/91
In: Discussion Paper, 280
This paper discusses fertilizer use and demand while taking into account nutrient requirements, variation in application rates by districts and marginal returns to fertilizer use. The paper also addresses the problem of availability and cost of fertilizers and seeds in the rural districts of Kisii and Nyeri. It also examines the margins in the distribution of fertilizer and seeds. In addition, the paper discusses policy alternatives to promote fertilizer use and to ascertain adequate seed availability for the most important crops
